Zero Waste Week Day Four. Frittered.
Tonight I made Pakora with a bag of out of date spinach which was just begining to wilt. Use any vegetables that you have shrivelling in the bottom of the fridge. Just cut the vegetables into slices, or shred according to their density. Remember that courgettes will cook a lot quicker than chunks of carrot. I have yet to find anyone who doesn't wolf down a plate of these delicious Indian snacks. Gram or Chickpea flour is easy to find, usually with gluten free products on the supermarket shelf, from wholefood shops or anywhere 'ethnic'.
Pakora
Pakora are always popular in our house. Very often I make them with chard as I have it growing in the garden. Pakora are one of those snacks that you can whisk up quickly if people turn up for happy hour and you want something hot and crispy to nibble on.
What to eat during an election...
Jim Messina was Obama's campaign manager in 2008 and says in a recent article in the Independent..."I miss how bad a campaign office smells at midnight." He once ate twenty-seven consecutive meals at McDonald's.
Why I'm not rich...
Little Dish is a £10 million a year business that makes children's ready meals for the big supermarkets. The range includes spaghetti with meatballs, cottage pie, fish pie, risotto... Like some of us - it's founder Hilary Graves had the inspiration for her business when she was pregnant. 'I realised no-one was making fresh healthy food for toddlers and young children' she says.
Well Hilary, we were - we were just giving them some of our dinner.
Usain Bolt - our Olympic Dish of the Day
So what does the fastest man in the world eat every day?
Usain Bolt's Breakfast - Yams and fried green bananas or maybe saltfish and ackee
Usain Bolt's Lunch - Rice with pork or beef
Usain Bolt's Dinner- Rice with beef or pork
Usain Bolt favourite food - KFC but especially their Chicken Nuggets (oh dear...) but you can go to our recipes for HOME-MADE chicken nuggets.
Shoreditch Festival - the Food
Here is the pizza-in-a-horsebox stall at Shoreditch Festival, although the biggest queue was outside the Caribbean food trailer. Was that because theirs is the most tasty? Was it because they had a sizzling jerk chicken barbecue on a very hot day, or was it because the girl who was supposed to be serving customers was texting all her friends? Anyway, we had the very nice beef stew and rice from Ghana. But while we're on the subject of street food - take a look at the Evening Standard list of 20 'guerilla grillers and breakaway bakers' here in the Capital.
The OLYMPIC LONDON 2012 foodie rant
Not a day goes by without a story about what you can't do at the Olympics. No t shirts with slogans, no food, no drinks, no picnics, the biggest Macdonalds in Europe and do not on any account call anything OLYMPIC or LONDON 2012. So nerr to the OLYMPICS - we want to say and do and eat what we like.
Vietnamese Rice Paper and what you can do with it
What to do on a weekend as miserable as this except cook? Last Sunday I went to Brick Lane and only had a fiver, although you can get a good meal for that I wanted to try more than one, so I was looking for the best bargains. I had two crispy filo pastry 'cigars' stuffed with feta and spinach for a £1 from one stall, and a box of four Vietnamese spring rolls for £3 from another. That left £1 for a juice. As I was watching the lady make the spring rolls to order - they soak the paper in water, fill them with salad and satay sauce and roll up - I decided to try it myself, so have been to buy a pack of the papers. This is the quickest, easiest, cheapest, healthiest snack I have had in a long time. I used peanut butter with soy, honey and lime to make the satay sauce, and the sweet chili sauce that most of us have now for dipping. My spring rolls were not as good looking as hers, but tasted the same! if you can't get the papers let me know and i'll send you some.
It's big in Taiwan
ribbet, ribbet, ribbet
The French lady in our village has started a frog patrol. She goes out in the evening to rescue frogs from the traffic. We are not quite so sure of her intentions.
